A memorable experience
Trollstigen is one of Norway's most famous mountain roads, known for its dramatic hairpin bends, steep mountain scenery, and spectacular viewpoints. The road connects Åndalsnes in Romsdalen with Valldal and the surrounding fjord landscape.
For visitors travelling through western Norway, Trollstigen is a memorable experience that combines mountain scenery, engineering, and one of the country's most distinctive driving routes. With Åndalsnes nearby, it is also an excellent starting point for exploring the mountains, fjords, and attractions of Romsdalen.
What is Trollstigen?
Trollstigen is a mountain road with 11 hairpin bends climbing through a steep landscape between Åndalsnes and Valldal. Its distinctive layout and spectacular setting make it a popular destination for visitors travelling through western Norway.
Trollstigen opened in 1936 and has become one of Norway's best-known scenic roads. Built to connect Romsdalen with Valldal and improve access between the inland mountain region and the fjord landscape, its construction required considerable engineering work in steep and difficult terrain. The result was a road famous for its dramatic bends and spectacular scenery.
The route is part of Norway's National Tourist Routes network and is one of the country's most recognisable scenic drives. Its combination of engineering, mountain landscape and accessible viewpoints makes it one of the region's most distinctive experiences. The road winds up the mountainside, passing waterfalls, rocky cliffs and dramatic mountain scenery. At the top, visitors reach a mountain plateau with viewpoints overlooking the road and the surrounding landscape.

Driving Trollstigen
Driving Trollstigen is an experience in itself. The road climbs steeply through a series of sharp bends, with sections passing close to the mountainside and overlooking the valley below.
The route is narrow in places, and drivers should take care, particularly when meeting larger vehicles. The road is not suitable for every vehicle or driving situation, and restrictions apply to buses and other large vehicles, including a maximum length of 13.3 metres for buses. Visitors should check current vehicle restrictions and road conditions before travelling.
Weather can also affect the experience. Fog, rain, and low visibility can make the mountain road more challenging, while snow and ice determine when the road can safely open for the season.
Trollstigen is generally a seasonal road, and its opening and closing dates depend on weather and road conditions. The road usually opens between mid-May and early June and closes for the winter sometime in October or November. Always check the latest road information before planning a visit.
Trollstigen viewpoints and Stigfossen waterfall
The Trollstigen plateau is one of the main attractions along the route. The visitor area provides viewpoints overlooking the road, the surrounding mountains, and the Stigfossen waterfall.
From the plateau, visitors can look down towards the winding road and the steep mountainside. The viewpoints offer excellent opportunities for photography and provide a different perspective on the scale of the mountain landscape. The area is particularly impressive when the road is visible below and the surrounding peaks rise above the plateau.
Stigfossen is one of the most recognisable natural landmarks along Trollstigen. The waterfall descends through the steep mountain landscape near the road, creating a dramatic feature of the route.
The combination of the waterfall, the mountain road and the surrounding rock faces makes this one of the most memorable sections of the journey, although water levels and visibility vary depending on the weather and season.

From Trollstigen to Åndalsnes
Åndalsnes is located at the southern end of Trollstigen and provides a convenient base for exploring the surrounding region. The town offers accommodation, restaurants, transport connections, and access to a range of outdoor activities.
Visitors can combine Trollstigen with a trip on the Golden Train, a ride on Romsdalsgondolen, or a hike in the surrounding mountains. The journey also connects naturally with other attractions in Romsdalen, including Trollveggen and the mountain landscape around the Romsdalsfjord.
For travellers arriving from Ålesund or Geiranger, Trollstigen is an important part of the journey towards Åndalsnes.
