shaping the future of Romsdalen

About Romsdalen

Romsdalen AS is an investment and development company focused on experience-based tourism, headquartered in Åndalsnes. Its purpose is to develop projects and initiatives that make Romsdalen a leading, profitable and sustainable destination. The company identifies and develops opportunities within the tourism industry to drive growth and create value, investing in selected tourism projects and businesses. These include Romsdalsgondolen, hotels, tourist train experiences on the Rauma Railway, fjord cruises, events and activity-based experiences.

This ambition builds on a long tradition of tourism in the region. Tourism in Romsdalen dates back to the late 19th century, initially driven by salmon fishing in the Rauma River, which attracted English fishing enthusiasts, as well as mountaineering. The first cruise ship called at the port of Åndalsnes in 1882.

Today, Åndalsnes and Romsdalen are among Norway’s best-known destinations in the fjords. The region is home to some of the country’s most iconic attractions, including the Rauma Railway, the Trollstigen National Tourist Route, Trollveggen (the Troll Wall) and the Romsdalseggen Ridge. Nearly one million tourists visit Romsdalen every year.

Romsdalen AS works on a commercial basis to develop, build, own, operate and market tourism facilities and experiences in Rauma and Romsdal, as well as related activities. This also includes investing in and participating in other companies with similar business objectives.

Norwegian Travel

Norwegian Travel provides Romsdalen AS with the backing of a larger tourism group, supporting its ambition to develop Romsdalen into a leading, year-round destination.

As part of Norwegian Travel’s wider portfolio of experience-based tourism businesses across Norway, Romsdalen AS combines local knowledge and strong regional roots with the group’s experience in developing, operating and marketing tourism experiences.

This supports the development of attractions, accommodation and activities that create lasting value for the region.

Sustinability

At Romsdalen AS, we are committed to environmental responsibility and sustainable development. Romsdalsgondolen in Åndalsnes is built around innovative solutions in design, materials and construction, carefully adapted to the mountain environment and the lack of road access to the site.

Much of the mountain station and restaurant was built using prefabricated timber modules transported by helicopter. The buildings stand on reversible foundations drilled into the rock, avoiding blasting and reducing the need for concrete. This approach minimises the impact on the landscape and allows the installations to be removed in the future without leaving lasting scars. Water, sewage and power infrastructure is routed through a tunnel drilled into the mountain, further reducing visible interventions in nature.

Environmental considerations were integrated throughout the construction process, supported by an environmental plan and an environmental advisor. Romsdalsgondolen’s operations are also environmentally certified.

Beyond its environmental ambitions, Romsdalsgondolen aims to strengthen Rauma and Romsdalen as a tourism destination, contributing to an estimated NOK 200 million in additional value creation and 200 new jobs in local tourism over ten years.
