A magical place
With steep mountains, deep fjords and green valleys, Romsdalen feels like a natural film set. The landscape has provided the backdrop for stories as different as Gulltransporten and Troll, from wartime drama along the railway to fairytale scenes beneath the mountain walls.
You can visit some of the locations that appear in these films and experience the landscape for yourself. Travel through the valley on The Golden Train, following the Rauma Railway past rivers, bridges and towering mountains. From the train, Romsdalen reveals the same dramatic scenery that has made it such a memorable setting on screen.
For an experience that combines the valley and the mountains, The Golden Train & Cable Car Ticket continues the journey up to Nesaksla with Romsdalsgondolen.
Gold Run
Gulltransporten—Gold Run—tells the story of the Norwegians who risked their lives to move Norway’s gold reserves out of Oslo during the Second World War. Part of the journey took place along the Rauma Railway in Romsdalen, linking the film’s historical events with the railway landscape that still runs through the valley today.
At Åndalsnes Train Station, you may recognise the scenes where the train arrives and the soldiers unload the precious cargo under the constant threat of attack. The film captures the urgency of the operation as the gold is moved between trains and trucks while enemy aircraft pose a constant danger.
To explore the railway and scenery connected to this history, book The Golden Train Roundtrip. The journey travels from Åndalsnes through Romsdalen towards Bjorli and back, with views of the Rauma River, Kylling Bridge, Troll Wall and other landmarks along the route. The experience also includes storytelling about the railway, the landscape and the history of the region.

Troll – Enter a Magical Fairytale
Troll brings Norwegian mountain landscapes into a modern fairytale. One of the film’s striking opening sequences features the Trolldindane mountains in Romsdalen, part of the dramatic landscape around Troll Wall, or Trollveggen.
The sheer scale of the rock face gives the film an imposing setting. You can experience the same mountain landscape from the Rauma Railway on The Golden Train. As the train travels through Romsdalen, you can look up at Troll Wall from the valley and see how the mountains shape the landscape around the railway.
For a wider view of Romsdalen, The Golden Train & Cable Car Ticket combines the train journey with a ride on Romsdalsgondolen to Nesaksla. This lets you experience the landscape from the valley floor and from above.

Follow the Troll Through Norway
The story then moves beyond Romsdalen to the Dovrefjell mountains, where an explosion awakens the sleeping troll. The film also takes viewers to Jotunheimen, including mountain landscapes associated with the giant troll’s journey through Norway.
Jotunheimen is home to Galdhøpiggen, Norway’s highest mountain, rising 2,469 metres above sea level. You do not need to climb the highest peaks to experience the region, however. The area offers a range of mountain landscapes and hiking routes to explore.
Pack your bags, follow the stories and see where the landscapes of Romsdalen take you.
